Students at state schools across the country are seeing their tuition rates rise as much as 10% from previous years. Colleges and universities in Louisiana, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and more are struggling to keep up with the rising costs of energy, health insurance, financial aid, and competitive faculty salaries while compensating for decreased state funding. Even where tuition fees aren’t being increased for students, other fees such as room and board are, forcing students to bear more of the financial burden for their education. And surprisingly, some universities – like the universities of Kentucky, Maine, and South Carolina –received more than was initially expected this year. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear originally proposed a 12% cut to higher education but only cut the funding by 3%, thanks in part to student activists who rallied at the state capitol.
